I think Jay Leno is a great entertainer. I was just watching Lyle Lovett and his “large” band finish off the May 25th show. Now I know you see this with a lot of teen acts like Jonas Brothers and (back in the day) Hanson, but Mr. Lovett had someone in his accompanying band playing the exact same thing on guitar. And he was standing right next to him!

I don’t know if I’ve ever seen something quite like that with someone as seasoned as Lovett. Slightly hard to see in the picture, but comment if you can prove otherwise.

In the category of “Who is that?” for coolest music in a film of 2008 I would have to nominate M.I.A.’s song, “Paper Planes”. It’s not that I haven’t heard of M.I.A. before; as a matter of fact I gave her 2005 album “Arular” a bunch of listens. I can’t, however, remember anything nearly as catchy as “Paper Planes” and it just rules as film music.

Don’t believe me? Check out the trailer for “Pineapple Express”. It kicks in at about the halfway mark. Not enough proof? Go out and see “Slumdog Millionaire” where it is masterfully layered over amazing footage. Stunning.

M.I.A. has put her own song to video — in my opinion, a disappointing effort. However, if you just minimize the window on your computer you can give it a listen and let your imagination run wild.
